world wide web (www.) as materialisation or manifestation of empathy
We share our experiences of daily events constantly on social media constantly (mostly through visual means and music and sound forther diversify this discussion), but how much of those experiences are really shared by the viewer who does not share and inhabit the same physical space, is it possible to discern someone's state or the reasons behind their states by content which is not only experienced through these machines but also media which is programmed in a way that aims at changing our states, and we argue that social media software acts like receptors in a body allowing the transfer of emotion asymmetrically.
The issue is that the algorithmic constructed constant of social media affects the way we perceive each other, and currently this is used to make us click things we subjectively find more or less interesting or emotional solely to generate more profit, this implies that at least large corporations are convinced that internal states can transfer through online media, and this can now be seen even stronger with facebooks new emoji 'likes' which are further detailing and cataloguing the emotional responses to content users have.
Since this is true for corporations, should we as concerned private citizens also use ways and methods which enable stronger sharing of internal states of users, should there be a direction or aim to action or physical activism in ones local space, does social media function as molecules some emotions bond easier to the media while others do not, what emotions are more worth sharing then others?
We conceptualize this as hormonal blockers which take over specific parts in the transferral network i.e. blocking receptors in cancer cells, and not allowing others to use it, which makes us ask the question is emotional transfer online symmetrical or asymmetrical, and given examples of AI manipulation by trolls online, does hate transfer easier online then joy, and why do we inherently think social media emotion transfer is symmetrical (something which I believe facebook is working to discover at the moment).
The 3 day workshop hopes to create discussion but also clarify and open these issues from a theoretical point of view with the intent of making something practical such as memes and songs which help to illustrate how emotions are transferred between users in our social media as empathy model. I hope to create a empathetic online space by opening up connections around the world with theoreticians and artists working with online media, participants will hopefully learn to discern how social media interfacing itself is in a sense modelled on empathy and that this medium is not only passive but can and is actively manipulated by corporations and anyone with the skills to do so.
I would like to also advertise the project in such groups on facebook as Immaterial Digital Labor and will hopefully be able to invite anyone to join the discussion through online spaces where group conversations are possible.
Because the implications are strong in the manipulation of emotions online we need to also discus the legal and ethical aspects of using social media like this, but the final question for me is, if social media is a model for empathy as such and automatically infers experience in a way that internal states are shared between users should we not use it consciously and openly to change society for the better?
